Why is the Monarch’s EndangeredDid you know that Monarchs have been on the decline in North America for more than 20 years placing them at risk of endangerment? There are only 5% of the Monarchs now, that we once had in the 80’s and 90’s (xerces.org) and they are currently classified as vulnerable. These amazing butterflies that were once a hallmark of our beautiful State, are now hard to spot!
The main causes of the decline are climate change, habitat loss, habitat degradation, disease and pesticide exposure. Lions are stepping up to help save Monarch Butterflies and here is how.
How are the CA Lions Helping
The Monarch Butterfly Gardens CA Lions project was developed by Lion Lynda Durand in district 4L4 with grant funding from the California Lions Foundation. The grant funds act as seed money to start the movement, pun intended!
The project’s mission is to see Monarch Butterfly Gardens Planted throughout the State of CA and increase butterfly access to the plants they need to reproduce and thrive.
You can help make this possible by making a small donation and receiving a Monarch Butterfly Garden Kit which includes the following items:
Download Helpful Monarch Help Guide
You can support monarch butterflies and other pollinators by creating habitats for them. This can include planting butterfly gardens, adding milkweed along roadsides, or restoring prairie habitats, among other options. Every bit of habitat helps pollinators, and everyone can make a difference. Every action counts!
Get a Kit and Fellow Social MediaWhen you donate and receive the kit, you are committing to planting a Monarch Butterfly Garden somewhere in California. We will ask you the city and county you are planting so we can follow the growth and we ask that you join the monarchmilkweedmapper.org to track your garden along with sightings of Monarch Butterflies, Caterpillars and Milkweed. We also want to hear your stories and see photos of your gardens so please follow us and post on our socials.
